Halfway through Thanksgiving dinner at my son’s house, my phone rang from an unknown number. I almost ignored it. Then a voice said, “Go home. Right now.” I lowered my voice. “Who is this?” There was a pause. “Just drive home—and whatever you do, don’t tell your son.” The call ended. I looked across the table at my son, who was laughing with his family as if nothing was wrong. I made an excuse, grabbed my coat, and drove home. Twenty minutes later, I pulled into my driveway and hit the brakes. My front door was wide open. The lights were on. And there was a car parked outside that I recognized immediately.
