My dad and I joined my husband’s family for dinner at an upscale restaurant. Before we had even finished eating, my mother-in-law waved the server over and pointed at my father. “Put his meal on a separate check. We’re not paying for him.” I looked at my husband, expecting him to say something. He heard her perfectly—and nodded. I pushed my chair back, furious, but Dad touched my arm and quietly said, “Keep eating.” So I did. When the bill finally arrived, my mother-in-law smiled and slid Dad’s check toward him. He didn’t even look at the total. He simply leaned back, looked around the table, and said one sentence. My husband immediately stopped smiling.
